Desktop

  1. My system just suddenly turns off minutes after switching it on

    1. A common cause for this is overheating or faulty power supply, but there are other things to consider. First open the case and ground yourself on a pipe to remove body static, then very carefully clean the dust inside. you may also need to remove the fan from the big heat sink over the cpu and clean the heat sink.

If you have a graphics card installed clean the card and its fan carefully. Turn on system and hopefully it will run ok.
    2. Didn't work? ...!!!

Unplug all the things you can run without, such as usb drives ,cameras etc. Open the case, ground yourself and unplug the power to any dvd drives. If system last's longer after doing this you either have a failing power supply or the power supply is pore quality and unable to supply the watts needed to power all your additional hardware.

  2. I get a black screen and S.M.A.R.T error message AND random shutting down

    1. Your hard drive is failing.!! Get your important data backed up asap! You will need a new drive and system migrated to it or re-installed. Its important to do this quickly as the manufacture recovery partition is also on the drive. If you loose the recovery partition you loose the ability to go back to factory settings. If you don't have full recovery cd/dvd's you will loose your windows system and need a new one installed which also means you will need to locate your license key that came with your original system or one you've installed.
    2. How to copy your files when windows wont start.
Download the ubuntu linux distro cd burn it to cd and boot to it and select 'try' NOT 'install' which will start a linux desktop you can use to copy 'My Documents' to a usb drive.
    3. You still need to book in for repair to have your system migrated to a new drive along with its recovery partition. This needs to be done asap as the drive will rapidly degrade to a point were too much data corruption reduces the chances of a successful system migration.

Windows restarts at random times when using it (also applies to laptops)

  1. If you see no errors when it restarts windows may be set to restart when errors happen, so you don't get to see any error messages which reduces any clues as to what's wrong. To change this start windows in safe mode and select 'Disable automatic restart'. You get into safe mode by continuously tapping the F8 key until you see the safe mode menu options. In windows 8 and 10 Hold down shift key whilst selecting restart.
  2. If you can see the blue stop error screen you will see a bunch of letters and numbers representing error codes and conditions. Hardware and ram are the only simple ones to look for and tackle, anything else will be a complicated issue and best done by an engineer.

Bellow are common error codes. If you get one of those codes, boot into safe mode and go to control panel / Administrator tools / event Viewer. Then look for errors under system to see if there are driver issues or Memory I/O errors. Also look for Drive I/O errors which can also cause shut-downs.

Common error code's that start with any of the bellow values...

    Driver codes: 0xC5 - 0xC6 - 0xD1 - 0xD6 - 0xD7 - 0xD8 - 0xF9 - 0xFE - 0x11B - 0x121

    Ram Error codes: 0x50 - 0xBE - 0xFC -

If you get these error codes try removing a ram chip from inside the case. On laptops ram is normally under a middle panel underneath laptop. in either case you will see a long board with a row of chips on it. Any other codes displayed are more complex to resolve unless you are a keen tech minded person. Click here for a full list of stop error codes.

Laptop

My system just suddenly turns off minutes after switching it on

  1. A common cause for this is overheating, shine a torch into the fan underneath and see how much light comes through the vent on the side, if you see allot of dust and dirt it may be over heating due to bad air circulation.

Try sucking dust out with a hoover, hold thin hoover attachment by the vent to pull more air through it and see if laptop runs longer. Get the laptop cleaned by a professional because the insides are tightly packed and 80% of the time laptop has to be stripped down for a more comprehensive clean.
  2. Check your own actions are not covering the fan vent under laptop, things like working with it on your lap and blocking fan vent with your leg. Try using a tray with it on your lap
  3. Does it only happen with graphic intense activity like game playing or video use?
The laptop may have been overheating causing chips to crack their solder seating over a long period of time. The cooling system may need re-seating on the cpu and graphics chip as heat dispersant may have been reduced due to long term baking.
  4. Remove all usb devices, and If shutdowns stop, you may have a faulty usb socket that's shorting out or the usb device has issues itself, so try it on a different system.
  5. Items 1 and 2 in Desktop section also applies to laptops..

  3. If item .2. doesn't work you will need to book it in for repair as data recovery would need to be performed on the recovery partition of your drive and used to build a new system on new drive.
