Repair a corrupted recycle bin or missing icon
Setting up your PC or laptop just the way you want it is great until something goes wrong or someone fiddles around with it. Loosing the recycle bin is a common problem, but it's not always' lost, its just not showing itself..
For Visa user's, try following first..
1) right-click the Vista Desktop (on a non-occupied area)
2) Click on Personalize
3) Select: 'Change desktop icons' (top option on left side panel)
4) At the Desktop Icon Settings, place a tick next to: 'Recycle Bin'.
If you've done it right, you should see the Desktop Icon Settings dialog.
Notice the other options in there...
You can put your 'My Computer' and / or Control Panel icons on the desktop also. This is handy as they are commonly used in many cases.
If the above didn't work, then it's a more complicated fix....
Your Bin may be corrupted by virus repair damage or a corrupted deleted file that's also corrupted the bin. In fact lots of things can cause this, so let's try repairing the bin.
Please note: That anything in the recycle bin before this fix, will be destroyed.
We need to open an elevated command prompt... don't be scared... be brave... I will follow you all the way through.. lol
Click the Orb for the task bar menu and type 'cmd' in the search box. You will see the cmd prompt option appear at the top. Right click it and select 'Run As Administrator'
Type the following command in the cmd window (Exactly has shown bellow).
rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin
This will clear out, reset, kill all the contents of the recycle bin for C: drive. If you have other drives, type the command in again using the drive letter for those drives. Only one drive at a time, so its a new command line for each drive.
Now,, if the icon disappears or looks wrong, just go through the first fix again up to step 4 but instead click the 'Change Icon' button and select the icon for the recycle bin. Then click 'ok' and close all dialogs and shut down and restart the computer.
Hopefully this helped you..!!!
